Landowner Partnerships

In the Shadow Lake community, SHADOW works with local landowners to develop stewardship plans. These plans will help the landowners to maximize the benefit of their property as well as protect the environment important the bog.

Ongoing Projects

Presently, SHADOW’s primary focus is acquiring the land adjacent to the present property. The acquisition project consists of the purchase of the peat bog, wetland, and forested properties adjacent to the more than 20 acres already protected by SHADOW. This property is threatened by residential development, which would seriously compromise the quality of the water available for the lake and bog system. Some of this land is in pristine condition and provides excellent nesting sites.

At the same time, SHADOW pursues activities to heighten awareness of the bog and the ecological issues surrounding it. These activities include educational tours, presentations to local organizations, making the interpretive center available to groups for presentations and meetings, and an annual celebration, the Frog Frolic. Another of SHADOW’s projects revolves around restoring and maintaining the land already under protection.

On December 14, 2000, SHADOW was formed as a 501(c)(3)organization
to preserve the unique peat bog and habitat surrounding the west and southwest sides of Shadow Lake.
